Abstract

The objective of the study was to identify the impact of nitrification inhibitors (DCD, DMPP and N-serve) on nitrification rates, measured by nitrate production and N2O emissions from unfertilised soil, under controlled temperature and moisture conditions in laboratory incubation experiments. The package contains data on soil mineral nitrogen and N2O levels measured over 70 days.

Methods Info
Step 1:
Description:
Treatments
Treatments applied were;Control (no fertiliser),Control + DMPP at 10 ug/g soil,Control + DCD at 10 ug/g soil,Control + N-serve at 10 ug/g soil,Two different soils were used, Hamilton soil that had undergone traditional cultivation (cult) and Hamilton soil that had been direct drill (DD)
Step 2:
Description:
Incubation Experiments
Soil was airdried and sieved prior to use.Nitrification inhibitors were added to airdried soil in solution to achieve a 60% WFPS moisture content.Samples were incubated at two tempertues (10 and 20oC) for 70 days and soil mineral N was measured from soil extracts taken weekly to fortnightly from triplicate samples.Gas samples (N2O and CO2) were taken from each treatment using 3 replicate samples with vials closed for a 24 hour period.
Instrument(s):
  • Skalar SAN++ segmented flow analyser.
  • Agilent Gas Chromatograph (6890).
