Abstract

This data package describes a field trial conducted to assess the influence of urea applied with and without urease inhibitors (NBPT) and nitrification inhibitor (DCD) on the production of an oat crop (cv. Nehuen) established in autumn 2012. The trial was designed to assess both the emission factor (EF) associated to the use of inorganis fertilizer and the effect of a mitigation option (N inhibitors). Experiment started in March 2012 and emissions are being estimated with the use of an automated greenhouse gas sampling unit. This information is not available for the country.

Methods Info
Step 1:
Description:
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
GHG emissions (CO2, N2O and CH4) are measures on an oat crop in 4x3 m plots, with the use of dynamic chambers (1 per plot). Four treatments are under evaluation with 3 replicates: control (no N addition), N treatment (120 kg N ha), N+urease inhibitor (NBPT) and N+nitrification inhibitor (DCD) at standard rates. Oat cv. Nehuen was seeded in March 2012 and it will be evaluated for a year period. Chambers are moved within the plot every 2 weeks.
Instrument(s):
  • Automated GHG Sampling System (Queensland University of Technology).
Step 2:
Description:
Soil Sampling
Soil samples (0-10; 10-20cm) are collected from within the plots for NO3- and NH4+ analysis. Soil samples are being extracted with 2 M KCI. Samples are filtered through Whatman No 42 filter papers. The filtrate is collected and kept in a freezer (-20C) until analysis, then they are defrosted and analyzed for NH4+, and NO3- by colourimetry.
Instrument(s):
  • 20cm corer.
Step 3:
Description:
Biomass Production
Oat yield and total biomass will be determined at harvest with the use of manual cutting on a 1x2m square section. A grain and straw subsample will be taken and dried at 65C by 24 h to determine dry matter yield (tDM/ha). This same subsample will be processed and taken to the laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Environmental Analysis at INIA Remehue (ISO 9001) for the determination of N concentration by Kjeldahl method.
Step 4:
Description:
Statistical Analysis
Analysis of variance with performed using the Genstat program (v.12.0).
Sampling Area And Frequency:

The trial is being conducted on a new-seed oat crop site. GHG emissions data are recorded daily (8 cycle per day for N2O and CH4; minute determinations for CO2). Soil samples for NO3 and NH4 availability are taken fortnightly. Rainfall, soil moisture and temperature (soil and air) are recorded daily.

Sampling Description:

Soil type: Typic Hapludans (Osorno soil series): Texture: Loamy; bulk density (0-10cm): 0.64 g/cm3; drainage: good; depth: 60 to 120cm; previous crop: permanent pasture (10yrs). Olsen P (0-20cm): 16+/-2.1mg/kg; water pH:5.6+/-0.04; soil organic matter: 17+/-1.4%
