A study of the impact of the nitrification inhibitors dicyandiamide (DCD) on nitrous oxide emissions from dairy cows urine deposited on pasture was conducted at Terang in south-western Victoria, Australia from July 2012 to August 2013. It was originally planned to apply components of treatment over 4 times periods (however due to issues around the use of DCD the experiment was terminated before the fourth application of urine). Initial experimental design was (4 treatments by 6 replicates) for soil sampling and two replicates of the 4 treatments for emissions measurement. Measurement system used automated chambers liked to a Fourier Transform infrared spectometer for gas analysis. Daily flux (g N2O-N/ha/day) was calculated for each chamber. Soil water (surface 0-65 mm) and soil temperature (50mm) was measured continuously in each chamber base. Soil mineral N content of all treatment and replicates was measured (0-100 mm) routinely. Initial site soil physical and chemical status were defined. Standard meteorological information was collected for an on-site weather station.
July 2012 - August 2013
Originally planned to apply components of treatment over 4 times periods (however due to issues around the use of DCD the experiment was terminated before the fourth application of urine). Initial experimental design was (4 treatments by 6 replicates) for soil sampling and two replicates of the 4 treatments for emissions measurement. The treatments were Treatment 1 - nil applied, Treatment 2 - urine @1000 kgN/ha was original target however urine was only applied three times to 25% of chamber base at each application on 17 Sept 2012, 22 Nov 2012 and 16 May 2013 [Note each urine patch was applied @ 1000 kg N/ha, but given only 75% of the chamber base had urine applied, the overall rate was for the chamber base was 750 kg N/ha), Treatment 3 - urine @ 1000 kg N/ha applied to 25% of the chamber base 17 Sept 2012, 22 Nov 2012 and 16 May 2013 and with DCD @10 kg a.i./ha applied as surface spray on 17 Sept 2012 and again 16 May 2013 [Note as study was terminated before the final planned urine application as in treatment 2 the patch application rate of urine was 1000 kg N/ha, but only 75% of the area was treated with urine gievn an overall application of 750 kg N/ha], Treatment 4 - urine @ 1000 kg N/ha applied to 25% of the chamber base 17 Sept 2012, 22 Nov 2012, and 16 May 2013 with DCD is mixed in with urine at each application at a rate equivalent to 20 kg a.i./ha [Note see treatment 3 and 4 for explaination, as the planned fourth application did not occur].
